Libertarian Party of Canada Maintaining Official Party Status |
An important deadline is fast approaching.
This spring, the Libertarian Party of Canada managed to regain official federal party status. This allows the party name to appear on the ballot, and allows the party to issue tax receipts for donations. As you can imagine, this is very important to the party.
As a result of recent changes to the Elections Act, Elections Canada now requires all federally registered political parties, in order to preserve official party status, to provide to Elections Canada the names, addresses, and declarations of at least 250 electors who are members of the party. This must be done every three years.
The deadline for this process was November 15, 2004. However, parties which had not yet submitted 250 names were given a 90 day extension. Failure to submit the 250 names will result in the party losing their status as a registered political party.
The LPC still needs to submit more members to meet the 250 name requirement. In order to meet the Elections Canada requirement, the LPC is conducting a membership drive: the usual membership fee is waived for anyone who is willing to be counted as a Libertarian Party of Canada member, and submit the appropriate form to fulfill the Elections Canada requirement. These members will be able to vote at the 2005 LPC Convention, to be held in the Toronto area, May 21-22, 2005.
To join, and help the LPC maintain official party status, you need to do the following:
Libertarian Party of CanadaForms must be sent to the party, not directly to Elections Canada.
